Cooper Mountain Vineyards (Willamette Valley, Oregon)

Robert and daughter, Barbara

Psychiatrist, homeopath and acupuncturist, Dr. Robert J. Gross, owner of Cooper Mountain Vineyards, nurtures his vines in an organic and biodynamic setting. The Willamette Valley has one of the most difficult climates in the US for organic farming because the region gets so much rain, which leads to rot in the vineyards. Rot is tough to treat using organic solutions. So it is especially commendable that Cooper Mountain is a pioneer of organic vineyards in Oregon and a leader in alternative farming and winemaking practices.  No doubt these techniques aid in the expression of Cooper Mountain’s unique vineyard character, its soils born from volcanic activity that took place 50 million years ago.

In addition to many other wines, including an Italian varietal called Tocai Friulano, Cooper Mountain makes a Pinot Noir called “Life” that’s biodynamic certified with no sulfites added. And their $21 Reserve Pinot Noir is a steal. I recommend a read through their entire website as they nicely articulate their philosophy on organics and biodynamics. This winery is a gem!
